Navigating the Festive Season with Resilience and Innovation https://meetmumz.com/motherfounder/2023/10/24/navigating-the-festive-season-with-resilience-and-innovation/ https://meetmumz.com/motherfounder/2023/10/24/navigating-the-festive-season-with-resilience-and-innovation/#respond Tue, 24 Oct 2023 08:19:11 +0000 https://meetmumz.com/motherfounder/?p=1173

As the leaves turn brilliant shades of crimson and gold, and the air becomes crisp and invigorating, there’s no mistaking that the season of festivities is upon us. The months leading up to the year-end are filled with a whirlwind of holidays, celebrations, and traditions. It’s a time for joy, connection, and reflection. Yet, for busy mother founders, this season can often bring a unique set of challenges, leaving them caught between the magic of the festivities and the overwhelm of juggling their many responsibilities.

The life of a motherfounder is a delicate balancing act on the best of days. Managing a household, nurturing a family, and steering a business venture can be exhilarating, but it can also be overwhelming. When you add the hustle and bustle of the holiday season into the mix, it can become a high-stakes juggling act. This time of year brings with it a beautiful tapestry of celebrations, but it can also mean an increased workload, whether it’s planning family gatherings, shopping for gifts, or handling year-end business matters.

One remarkable aspect of the season is the creative and entrepreneurial spirit that it inspires. Across the world, there are founders who have harnessed the festive spirit to create businesses that not only celebrate the season but also make life easier for fellow mothers and families. These innovative founders have not only embraced the magic of the season but have found ways to share it with others.

Like we have Seema Chand, As a single mother and founder of Rigouts, her story is one of resilience and empowerment. Balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship she is driven by her passion for sustainable fashion. Rigouts is her way of making a positive impact, inspiring others to embrace conscious choices and redefine traditional fashion.

And then we also have women like Nivvy, who lives 2 separate lives! A medical scientist by day who travels and trains other scientists on medical devices and medical tests and a dancer and jewelry designer in her downtime. She loves to travel, and enjoys her tea and Punjabi pop music! Her clay based customized jewellery brings with it the spirit of Joy and Celebration!

Then In the bustling streets of Hong Kong, we find another extraordinary mother founder, Nat, who embodies the spirit of resilience and innovation. Nat runs not one but two businesses, each dedicated to improving the lives of mothers and families. Her first venture specializes in health and mental wealth, offering a range of services that empower mothers to prioritize self-care, well-being, and mental health in their daily lives. Recognizing the challenges that often accompany motherhood, she has created services that provides support, resources, and guidance for navigating the intricacies of mental well-being. Her second business, driven by her passion for sustainable fashion, focuses on delivering high-quality baby products. In an era when safety and comfort are paramount, she’s curated a selection of items that not only meet the stringent standards but also ensure that mothers can trust the products they use.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the festive season, we also encounter Kavitha, a remarkable motherfounder with a keen eye for creativity. Kavitha’s passion for art and design led her to establish a business that specializes in colorful portraits and unique home decor products. Her handcrafted creations are a fusion of vibrant colors and intricate designs, each piece reflecting her artistic uniqueness.

Vibhuti Gupta’s return to the fashion industry is nothing short of inspirational. After an eight-year hiatus dedicated to nurturing her family, she is now embarking on a new chapter of her career. Her decision to resume work, fueled by her enduring passion for fashion, reflects her resilience and determination. It’s a reminder that life’s various chapters, including those focused on family, can coexist with professional ambitions. Vibhuti’s story is a testament to the idea that it’s never too late to reignite one’s career, and her return to the fashion world is a celebration of the strength and drive that mothers like her bring to every aspect of their lives.

And last but not least we have Adel, who just celebrated her 365 days in business, made her first hire, and relentlessly works with fellow founders helping them to amplify their brand storytelling on social and build a following of loyal fans. No matter your industry or business size, she brings your brand to life and makes social media easy.

These founders, among others, have not only navigated the challenges of the festive season but have also leveraged their experiences to offer solutions and inspiration to fellow mothers. They understand the delicate balance that comes with being both a mother and a founder and have made it their mission to make the season more manageable and enjoyable for everyone.

Prioritizing Mothers’ Mental Health: Challenges, Responses, and the Path to Wellness! https://meetmumz.com/motherfounder/2023/09/25/prioritizing-mothers-mental-health-challenges-responses-and-the-path-to-wellness/ https://meetmumz.com/motherfounder/2023/09/25/prioritizing-mothers-mental-health-challenges-responses-and-the-path-to-wellness/#respond Mon, 25 Sep 2023 11:46:24 +0000 https://meetmumz.com/motherfounder/?p=1031

Introduction:

World Mental Health Day is an important occasion to shed light on the mental well-being of women, especially mothers, who often face unique challenges in their journey towards self-care and mental wellness.

We asked the members of our meetmumz community : What is that challenge that as women/mothers takes precedence over our self-focus on mental health?

In response to the question on how mothers and mother/founders tackle the challenges faced as they prioritize over their mental health, mothers from diverse backgrounds shared their thoughts. Their responses unveil critical issues, but they also provide insights into what mothers truly need to embrace a mindset of mental wellness.

Challenges That Take Precedence:

Challenge 1: Stigma and Judgment

Mothers highlighted the persistent stigma, judgment, and shame associated with seeking help for mental health concerns. Many fear that asking for help might make them appear “weak, crazy, not in control”. This stigma often prevents them from taking the crucial step of reaching out for support, even when they desperately need it. The ability to provide them with a conducive environment that opens the conversations without stigma or judgment is what society, families, organizations, and communities should promote! Changing the narrative and the mindset bias!

Challenge 2: Relying on Willpower

The second significant challenge discussed was the reliance on sheer willpower to manage life’s demands. Mothers often find themselves in a constant juggling act, trying to maintain control over various responsibilities, schedules, ad-hoc requests and especially for stay-at-home mothers, the “always” available mindset. This reliance on willpower can lead to burnout and exhaustion as they overlook the root causes of their stress and anxiety. Consciously Changing the Narrative to understand and respect that “stay-at-home” mothers are also working.

Challenge 3: The Domino Effect

Mothers emphasized that their mental health doesn’t exist in isolation; it has a profound impact on their families, especially their children. When mothers neglect their well-being, it can create a ripple effect, affecting the emotional health of their loved ones. Thus, they recognize the importance of prioritizing their mental health not only for themselves but for the sake of their families. As they say, a Happy Mom, a Happy Society!

Challenge 4: Social Media’s Influence

Mothers also discussed the role of social media in their lives. While it can be a valuable platform for connection and support, it can also contribute to feelings of inadequacy. The comparison with others’ seemingly perfect lives portrayed on social media can lead to anxiety, isolation, and burnout. It is KEY to understand the difference between REAL and REEL. Each motherhood journey is at a different stage and experience. Focussing on YOU is crucial towards BELIVING IN WHAT YOU ARE DOING IS ENOUGH!!

Responses and Insights:

Mothers shared valuable insights on these challenges, emphasizing the need to break the stigma around mental health, address root causes rather than relying on temporary coping mechanisms, and recognize the importance of mental wellness as a family affair. They highlighted that seeking help is an act of strength, not weakness, and that self-care is not selfish but essential for everyone’s well-being.

Takeaways:

1. It’s crucial to normalize discussions about mental health and encourage mothers to seek help without fear of judgment.

2. Addressing the root causes of stress and anxiety is essential for long-term mental wellness.

3. The well-being of mothers has a significant impact on their families, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing self-care.

4. While social media can be a valuable tool for connection, it’s essential to use it mindfully and avoid unhealthy comparisons.

Conclusion:

On World Mental Health Day, let us remember that mothers play a central role in their families’ well-being. Their mental health should be a priority, not an afterthought. By addressing the challenges they face and embracing a mindset of mental wellness, we can create a world where mothers thrive, setting a positive example for their children and families.

Always be led by your dreams https://meetmumz.com/motherfounder/2023/05/06/always-be-led-by-your-dreams/ https://meetmumz.com/motherfounder/2023/05/06/always-be-led-by-your-dreams/#respond Sat, 06 May 2023 09:07:19 +0000 https://meetmumz.com/motherfounder/?p=595

Always be led by your dreams:

Why is it so important that as women, we are led by our dreams.

In a world that is constantly evolving, where progress and empowerment are at the forefront of conversations, one thing remains constant: the undeniable potential within every woman’s dreams. Dreams hold extraordinary power, acting as catalysts for growth, resilience, and self-discovery. It is through the pursuit of these dreams that women can truly flourish and break free from societal constraints. By following their passions, women can pave the way for their own unique paths, creating a world that embraces diversity, inclusivity, and boundless opportunities.

In this blog, we delve into the compelling reasons why women should always be led by their dreams, empowering themselves and inspiring countless others along the way. Join us on this journey of self-actualization, where dreams become stepping stones towards a future filled with endless possibilities.

  1. Empowerment and Self-Actualization: Women should always be led by their dreams because it empowers them to pursue their passions and achieve their full potential. By following their dreams, women can tap into their unique talents, strengths, and interests, which ultimately leads to self-actualization and personal fulfillment.
  2. Breaking Societal Barriers: Historically, women have faced numerous societal barriers and gender-based limitations. Following their dreams allows women to challenge and break through these barriers, proving that they are capable of achieving greatness in any field or endeavor they choose.
  3. Role Modeling and Inspiration: When women lead by dreams, they become powerful role models for other women and girls. By pursuing their aspirations, women inspire others to believe in themselves, challenge stereotypes, and strive for their own dreams, creating a positive cycle of empowerment and encouragement.
  4. Contribution to Society: When women follow their dreams, they bring unique perspectives, talents, and ideas to various spheres of society. By actively participating in their chosen fields, women contribute their expertise and make valuable contributions, enhancing innovation, diversity, and overall societal progress.
  5. Redefining Success and Happiness: Women should be led by their dreams because it allows them to redefine success and happiness on their own terms. By prioritizing their dreams and aspirations, women can create fulfilling lives that align with their personal values, interests, and goals, rather than adhering to societal expectations or predefined notions of success. This empowers women to forge their own paths and live authentically.

What we are in Control and What Can We Do?

  1. Chase your passions fearlessly: Embrace your dreams wholeheartedly and let them guide you towards the life you’ve always envisioned. Don’t be afraid to take risks and pursue what truly makes your heart sing. #DreamsLeadTheWay
  2. Prioritize self-care: As a mother, it’s easy to put your own dreams on hold while focusing on your family. Remember, taking care of yourself is essential for achieving your goals. Make time for self-care rituals that rejuvenate your spirit and keep your dreams alive. #SelfCareforDreamers
  3. Set achievable milestones: Break down your dreams into smaller, manageable goals that you can work towards every day. Celebrate each milestone you reach, knowing that you’re one step closer to realizing your ultimate aspirations. #MilestonesToSuccess
  4. Embrace resilience and perseverance: The path to fulfilling your dreams may not always be smooth, but remember that setbacks and challenges are part of the journey. Embrace resilience, learn from failures, and never lose sight of your dreams. Your determination will lead you to extraordinary places. #DreamsNeverFade
  5. Surround yourself with a supportive tribe: Build a community of like-minded individuals who believe in your dreams and uplift you. Surround yourself with people who encourage and inspire you to keep pushing forward, even when the journey gets tough. #DreamersUnite

And while in this journey, one will find constantly in a tug of war, navigating through the many changes and curve ball life throws at you,  there is One WORD that keeps the momentum going: To BELIEVE! It is worth it to start there..

“It is What You See It Is”

Motherhood and career are two important aspects of a woman’s life that can bring fulfillment and joy. However, balancing these two can be challenging, especially in a society where the expectations of women are often high.

Today we want to highlight and talk around the quote  “It is what you see it is”

that reminds us that our perspective towards motherhood and career can greatly impact our ability to balance the two, if that is what you are looking at.

Motherhood and Career: A Balancing Act

For many women, motherhood is a full-time job that requires a lot of time and energy. It is also a job that comes with a lot of emotional and physical demands. On the other hand, a career demands time, effort, and commitment. Finding a balance between these two can be a daunting task, especially in the early days.

However, the quote “It is what you see it is” reminds us that our perspective can make all the difference.

If we see motherhood and career as two separate entities that need to be balanced, we may find ourselves constantly struggling to meet our expectations and finding ourselves toppling to the sidelines more often than we wish for. But, should we see them as complementary aspects of our lives, where we can find ways to integrate them , creates pockets to learn and unlearn from either and cross apply the expectations, demands and prioritizing tasks , we can create a fulfilling life.

The Top 4 things you can focus on:

  1. Prioritize: Creating a list of tasks that need your presence to be completed each day and prioritize them based on importance. This can help you stay organized and focus on what really matters.( that day)
  2. Set realistic goals: Set achievable goals for yourself, both in your personal life and at work. This helps you to feel more in control of your life and reduce stress.
  3. Communication: Talk to your parter, support systems, networks and employer to find ways to accommodate your schedule. There is always a way to “negotiate like a mom” ( A topic we cover in our upcoming event)
  4. Embrace technology: Use technology to your advantage, whether that means using apps to help you manage your schedule or understanding ways to create systems.

Changing Perspectives: From Guilt to Empowerment

One of the biggest challenges of balancing motherhood and career is the feeling of guilt. Many women feel guilty for not spending enough time with their children or for not being fully committed to their career.

However, the quote “It is what you see it is” challenges us to change our perspective from guilt to empowerment.

Instead of feeling guilty for not being able to do it all, we can empower ourselves by recognizing the value of both motherhood and career. We can also seek support from our partners, family, and friends to help us navigate this balancing act. Instead of living up to the “super hero” tag, it is about “BEing” in the role you are playing. Instead of depleting the tank to give it your all, it is visualizing filling your tank by being present.

Understanding that there are ways and tools to maneuver, processes and mindset changes required that let the women move away from the “guilt messaging” to “redefining her own ways for feeling empowered”

Top 4 Things you can focus on:

  1. Practice self-compassion: In taking care of others, we often forget to Be kind to ourselfs and practice self-compassion. Acknowledge that it’s okay to make mistakes, and remind yourself that you’re doing the best you can.
  2. Reframe your thinking: Instead of thinking about what you’re not doing as a or because of you are a mother, focus on the positive things you are doing. For example, instead of thinking “I didn’t spend enough time with my child today,” think “I did my best to balance my work and family responsibilities today.”
  3. Let go of perfectionism: Don’t get sold on the idea of being the “Super hero” or “The Perfect Mom” . Let go of that idea. Enjoy and find laughter in being the imperfect or just good enough mother who is doing her best.
  4. Connect with other mothers: Connect with other mothers who understand what you’re going through. This can help you feel less alone and provide you with support and advice. Community goes a long way in helping us survive. ( Join our Community of Mothers at Meetmumz.com)

Creating a Fulfilling Life

Career or Career Pause are both stages in the life of a mother where the learnings never stop. The ability and charm that focusses on the little daily nuances, the work that you do ( paid or unpaid), the impact it shows and the meaning it creates for those around you , alongside motherhood is enough to create a Fulfilling Life

Ultimately, the quote “It is what you see it is” reminds us that we have the power to create a fulfilling life that integrates motherhood and career.(and even career pause).

By changing our perspective and recognizing the value our current stage has to offer, we can find ways to balance and create a life that brings us joy and satisfaction.

Top things to decide having a Career OR a Career Pause.

  1. Identify what brings you joy: Identify the things in your life that bring you joy, whether that’s spending time with your family, pursuing a hobby, or working on a project, upskilling your learnings, learning new things.
  2. Set personal goals: Set personal goals for yourself, away from that of your roles you play. Celebrate your accomplishments along the way.
  3. Build meaningful relationships: Build meaningful relationships with friends, family, and colleagues who support and encourage you.
  4. Take care of your health: Take care of your emotional, physical and mental health.
  5. Practice mindfulness: Practice mindfulness by being present in the moment and focusing on the things that matter most to you.
  6. Embrace your journey: Embrace your journey and remember that everyone’s path is different. Focus on what’s important to you and celebrate the life you’ve built, whether you’re in the midst of a career or taking a career pause.

Conclusion

Balancing motherhood and career is not easy, but it is possible. It requires us to shift our perspective and recognize the value of both.

“It is what you see it is.”

Saying that, we would also like to celebrate a career pause or shift that can be a powerful way to shift the perspective towards women on motherhood and career breaks. Taking a break from a career to care for a child or pursuing a new career path can be an opportunity for growth and development too. It is about redefining the meaning of creating a fulfilled “successful” life.

There was never a place for her in the ranks of the terrible, slow army of the cautious.

She ran ahead, where there were no paths.

– Dorothy Parker, writing about Isadora Duncan

(and on a really weird side note, my Grandmother wanted to name me Isadora, maybe even back then she knew that trailblazing was going to be part of my path.)

A few years ago, I found myself at a crossroads…

At that time, I’ve spent 14 years in factual television working as a producer, and director and eventually working my way up to the title of Executive Producer for National Geographic. At that time, I could feel the pull to start doing something different so I left and started a new full-time job:

Title: Mom

Team Size: 2

Hours: 24/7

Learning Curve: Humungous

With my employees or bosses (depending on your view of things) turned 3 and 1 respectively, I decided that a job that consumed my every waking hour was too easy, so I decided to add a new title to my resume:  Entrepreneur.

Now the transition is not an easy one (still ongoing in fact!). I never quite saw myself as a Founder or to use an old-school title, a Businesswoman. An unfortunate result of the generation I grew up with. We were still of the belief that you had one career and you had to decide this path in college and pursue it after. We were slaves of this thinking and that only certain people could do certain jobs – math people went into Management and Business, Creatives when into Advertising and Production, and the matching list goes on.

So when I found myself at a crossroads post-motherhood, I didn’t quite know what to do. Return to what I knew but was no longer challenging me or listen to a little voice inside me that was pushing me to try something new?

This is the part in the movie where a good soundtrack kicks in and a montage of me getting my makeover happens in 30 seconds. It, of course, didn’t happen that fast and that easily but there were a few key things that helped me move into this new direction.

  1. Attending an aptly named talk hosted by MeetMumz “Are you at a crossroads?”
  2. Learning that there were people who helped women who have taken “career breaks” (In quotes because there is nothing about being a mom that makes it a break)
  3. Getting a Back to Work Career Coach (Nerice Gietel)
  4. Listing to said Coach
  5. Breaking out of my comfort zone and joined the Founder Institute, a preseed accelerator program
  6. Started a company, Campfire Crates

All I really wanted to find out was if I had what it takes, and it turns out, I’m actually quite good at it. The biggest learning was that building and running a business is not that far off from running a production: you need creativity, team building, management and organization, presentation and communication skills. And as one of our mentors shared with us, “you have to love problems” and in the production world, that’s one of the key motivators that excites us, the unknown and the ability to face them head-on. As all production people know, the number one rule in production is to prepare for everything to go wrong.

Now there was still quite a large learning curve in building the business attending an accelerator program like the Founder Insititute program was a good fit for someone like me who had zero background in building and running companies. The best thing about the program though, was the people, meeting so many different people from different backgrounds who all shared my desire to make a difference.

Many people talk about burning desires. Mine has always been to work on something that mattered. I did a lot of that making documentaries and factual television. I had no idea that being an Entrepreneur would offer that opportunity as well.

So in 2019,  I became one of the nine graduates (out of the original 32-member cohort). I have founded and am running a company called Campfire Crates, a multicultural content company for families raising their kids outside of their home countries.

In between that time and now, I have grown Campfire Crates into a profitable business that sells Activity Books worldwide on Amazon. We now have 5 titles and are happily making Filipino kids around the world happy.

I have grown so much in the experience of following my passion outside of the home and I feel so strongly for how I felt at that moment of crossroads, and how lucky I was that someone (Ekta!) had put that talk together that changed my life. And now, we hope that this new version of that talk, turned conference could help so many others out there asking the same questions as well…

It is, with no exaggeration, life-changing. And I am living proof of that. And I am truly grateful for the help I got to listen to my heart.
